The Palace of Versailles
When the
château was built, Versailles was a country village; today, however, it is a
wealthy suburb of Paris, some 20 kilometres southwest of the French capital.
The court of Versailles was the center of political power in France from 1682,
when Louis XIV moved from Paris, until the royal family was forced to
return to the capital in October 1789 after the beginning of the French
Revolution. Versailles is therefore famous not only as a building, but as a
symbol of the system of absolute monarchy of the Ancien Regime.
Notable Rooms
Built in 1690, the Hall of
Mirrors is perhaps the most celebrated room in the château of Versailles.
Setting for many of the ceremonies of the French Court during the Ancien Regime,
the galerie des glaces has also inspired numerous copies and
renditions throughout the world.
The present chapel of the Palace of Versailles is the fifth in the history of the
palace. These chapels evolved with the expansion of the château and formed the
focal point of the daily life of the court during the Ancien Régime
